Means for determining the exact geographic location of a target on a battlefield

Abstract

A method and apparatus for locating a target on a battlefield 13 is disclosed comprising a means for generating a real-world image of the target 17 on the battlefield having a slant angle and vantage point location that are only approximately known, a means for generating a virtual environment simulating the geography of the battlefield that may be viewed in three dimensions from any direction, a means for producing a simulated view of the virtual environment using the approximately known slant angle and vantage point location, a means for correlating the real image of the target with the simulated view of the virtual environment to determine the location of the target in the simulated view corresponding to the location of the target in the real image and a means for determining the virtual location of the target in the virtual environment in order to determine the exact geographic location of the target in the real world. The disclosed arrangement is particularly suited for use on AWACS type aircraft, satellites or remotely piloted vehicles (RPV's).
